Acts 2:38 (KJV)
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
Breakdown
Repent (μετανοήσατε – metanoēsate, Strong’s G3340):
To change one’s mind, turn around, or have a complete change of heart and direction toward God.
Be baptized every one of you (βαπτισθήτω ἕκαστος – baptisthētō hekastos, Strong’s G907):
Command in the passive imperative — not optional. Every individual must undergo baptism.
In the name of Jesus Christ (ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ):
The exclusive baptismal formula given in Scripture, identifying salvation in Christ alone.
For the remission of sins (εἰς ἄφεσιν τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν – eis aphesin tōn hamartiōn):
“Eis” (unto/for) indicates purpose, not symbol. Baptism in Jesus’ Name brings forgiveness/remission of sins.
Ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (λήψεσθε τὴν δωρεὰν τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος):
Promise of the Spirit’s indwelling — the same Spirit poured out in Acts 2:4 with speaking in tongues as evidence.
